About how much money is spent each year trying to relieve lower back pain?
Americans spent $86 billion on medical related procedures for back pain

Yoga intervention vs. standard medical care
Know the methods of this study – how long (weeks) did the yoga group do yoga ;
How many sessions per week?
24 weeks, 2 90 min sessions/week
What were the four measures?
Functionality, pain, depression, medication use
What were the results at 24 weeks?
For functionality and pain, both groups dropped but the difference between the two in favor of yoga was significant. For depression and med. Use, both groupd dropped and Yoga dropped more but the difference wasn’t significant
At 12 weeks?
Yoga group had better results, but they weren’t significant
About how many in the yoga group were still practicing yoga 6 months later?
2/3

6 weeks of yoga vs. supportive counseling
What were the three measures?
Anxiety/depression questionnaire, perceived stress levels, saliva test measuring cortisol levels
What were the results?
Yoga: Significant decrease in 6AM saliva cortisol levels(Dropped @ all other times, but not significant) Within group, there is a significant drop in cortisol levels, but only for people who initially had low cortisol levels (People with less stress might benefit more from yoga).Significant drops in anxiety(P=.01). Sig. drop in both depression and perceived counseling
Supportive Counseling: Decrease in saliva cortisol levels, but not significant.Significant drop in anxiety(not as significant as yoga( P=.05)) Significant drop in depression (not as significant as yoga)
What does it mean if a researcher does a “within-groups” comparison?
Comparing results within the group (i.e. yoga results intitially compared after 6 weeks within same group)
What does it mean if a researcher does a “within-groups” comparison?
Comparing results within the group (i.e. yoga results intitially compared after 6 weeks within same group)
What does it mean if a researcher does a “between-groups” comparison?
comparing results between the two groups (i.e. yoga results vs. supportive counseling results after 6 weeks)
What are the weaknesses with this study and how can they be improved?
Ways to improve study:
make the intervention longer than 6 weeks (Is this realistic though?)
Have more subjects in study
Make sure both groups receive equal amounts of therapy (maybe have some group counseling sessions for the counseling group as a way to receive more weekly treatment)
Need to keep in mind that there are limitations to studies (based on grant $ amount, people’s willingness to participate, etc.)
* Pregnant women and stress study:
* What were the two groups and what did each “get’?
Yoga vs. control group: Yoga group practiced 18 yoga poses, breathing exercises; control group did approx. 30 strengthening/stretching exercises
What were the results re stress? What were the results re heart / autonomic
nervous system measures?
Perceived Stress Levels: Dropped by 1/3 in yoga, increased by 6-7% in control (significant)
Autonomic Nerve Responses/Perceived Heart Rhythm: Yoga group improved in all measures (P=.001)
Speaker:
* What was her injury that caused so much pain?
Diver @ North Carolina, chronic shin splints (injury, pain). Went into marathon/triathalon until body was so degenerative in knees and hips, couldn’t do high impact (run)
