.An opposition of the expansion of slavery into the west.
Fugitive Slave Law
.Sought to lessen tensions for the south by creating a law that would return runaway slaves back to their masters.
Harriet Tubman

Ostend Manifesto
.U.S. wanted to claim Cuba from Spain and if this was refused a war would be declared between the two.
Kansas Nebraska Act
.created the states Kansas and Nebraska and with popular sovereignty allowed the people to decide if these states would be free or not that sparked later controversy.

.A statement declaring that states acquired from Mexico.

.Wrote "The Liberator" and spoke strongly about anti-slavery.
Frederick Douglas
.A famous speaker for the abolishment of slavery, Wrote "The North Star." And served as an adviser to Abraham Lincoln.
Popular Sovereignty.
. A sovereignty is vested in the people. This gave the people such opportunities to decide whether a state would become a slave state. or a free state.

. A trail to Canada. Harriet Tubman lead runaway slaves to freedom.

. Made of five bills. CA entered as free state. People would chose whether a state is free or not. Texas gave up lands for Mexico. Slave trade abolished in Columbia.

. Created a vast difference in politic and society between the North and South.
Panic of 1857
. A financial panic by overexpansion and bad economy.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
.Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that described the horrid lifestyle of a southern slave. This novel was to create a wider understanding of the effects of slavery.
Bleeding Kansas
.Kansas was added as a free state but conflicts between anti-slaves and abolitionists created a series of controversies that later developed the first battle of the Civil War.
Crittenden Compromise.
. A plan to stop states from seceding from the Union. It was an unsuccessful attempt.
Fort Sumter.
.A fort at where the first battle of the Civil War took place between the Union and the Confederates.
Jefferson Davis.
.President of the Confederates. Fought the Union but failed to recognize the problems arising in the South, such as a worsening economy, and not listening to the people's needs, and mainly focused on war efforts.
Anaconda Plan.
.A plan by the Union to separate the Confederacy from the Union by sea blockades and taking the Mississippi River away from there control. This weakened the Confederates supplies and created a leading Union.
Robert E. Lee
.A military adviser for Jefferson Davis. Was the commanding leader of the Confederate states. Was later defeated by the Union.
Ulysses S. Grant.
.A military leader under Abraham Lincoln that fought for the Union. succeeded in winning the Civil War. Later became the 18th president of the United States.
Iron Clads.
.Iron ships developed by the Union. These ships were nearly indestructible to canons from Confederate warfare. Because of it's strong design it proved very successful in the Civil War.
Battle of Antietam
.The first battle to take place in the Union territories. An ambush of the Union by the Confederates create a very bloody-,most bloodiest battle-of the civil war.
Emancipation Proclamation.
.Passed by Abraham Lincoln that freed a great number of slaves and increased military recruits.
54th Regiment
.A recruitment for soldiers in the Union. the first recruitment during the war that permitted blacks to join the war. This was later followed by strengthening blacks rights in the war with the emancipation proclamation.
Morril Tariff Act 1861.
.A law which raised rates to protect and encourage industry in high wages to industrial workers.
Homestead Act.
.Gave 160 acres of undeveloped federal land which included free slaves. Had to live on it for a minimum of five years and must be 25 years or older.
Legal Tender Act.
.Created to issue paper money to finance the Civil War without raising taxes.
Pacific Railway Act.
.Promoted the construction of the trans continental railroad through government bonds and grants of land to railroad companies.
National Bank Act 1863.
.Established national charters for banks. Encouraged the development of the national currency.
Battle of Vicksburg.
.A battle that took place at the Mississippi River againsts the Confederates.
Battle of Gettysburg.
.A battle at Gettysburg that was recognized for the largest amount of lost casualties.
Copperheads.
.A vocal group of Democrats in the Northern United States who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates.
