polk wanted texas to extend to the rio grande instead of its known river the nuces.. they tried to buy the territory but mexicans didnt want to give anymore territory to the land hungry yankees.. so polk ordered soldiers and before he could start a war.. the mexicans attacked and he blamed the start of the war on them

when the union had waged war on mexico.. mexico was in one of the worst positions it has been in in a long time... Mexico didnt have any money or governement.. they had lost their relationships and were fitghting with the indians.. so while they were fighting with the union they were also fighting in their own state..

whigs and people like them were angry and thought Polk only was waging the war to gain more territory..

americans in sacremento launched the bear flag revolt.. which made california independent from mexico.. when taylor fought to the rio grande each town he conquered he would tell the town that he would protect them from indians to gain their support.. even after he won mexico still wouldnt surreneder california so the americans captured mexico city.. that made mexico agree to terms.. after finally gettin mexico it turned out to be a bad thing because it created tension between the north and south on slavery

they tried to make an amendment that said they would not allow slavery in any of the states we took from mexico.. the amendment didnt get past the senate which was full of people from the south...

when farmers got to their destination they immediatly went to work... they had to start building towns and governments and their supplys were usually low

everybody went to california looking for gold.. mostly men.. most didnt make that much more money...most of the women were prostitutes

started out with 200 but grew to 50000 because of people using its rivers to get to the digging sights..there were so many houses that they had to make the streets smaller

many chinese emigrants came in search of gold or the "golden mountain".. whites were hostile to chinese immigrants only when they were they were looking for gold so they usually got jobs or made restraunts
