Defense Mechanisms:
Techniques the unconscious part of the ego uses to keep certain thoughts and impulses hidden in order to avoid anxiety. these tools are not used consciously.
Denial:
in denial a person will not face the real issue at hand and decide to blame other sources or people.
repression
this involves putting unpleasant thoughts out of mind and anything that may remind one of the unpleasant thing.
reaction formation
keeps the thoughts we are not so pleased with out of mind and we begin to initiate the opposite of the things that we think about.
projection
reflecting one’s own fears, insecurities on someone else.
rationalization
rationalizing ones actions that may bring shame by trying to justify why one may have done something.
intellectualization
creates a separation between relatiy and oneself by using words that give less meaning to what is really being experienced. It allows one to deal with issues better by using words that are less dramatic. EX: instead of saying someone’s daugher was murdered, you say she passed away.
displacement
strong emotions are reflected on someone or something else instead of the source. Ex: a husband is depressed from a divorce so he takes his frustrations out on the children.
sublimation
a type of displacement that involves producing constructive things from ones strong emotions.
Freudian Slips or Parapraxes
which give insights into what is going on in the unconscious mind on accident.
parapraxes are failures of the defense and can be harmful.
Humor:
wit or humor is a way of venting that allows unusual thoughts, actions, etc. to be expressed. Freud thinks it is a form of sublimation that allowed inner thoughts that could be harmful to be expressed in a safe manner.
good jokes- disguised impulses
bad jokes- undisguised impulses.
