What are two types of sheets used in a workbook?
Chart sheets and Worksheets
List two ways of identifying the active cell in the worksheet.
The active cell is surrounded by a thick border and its cell reference appears in the Name Box
What is the cell reference for the cell located in the third column and fifth row of a worksheet?
C5
What keyboard shortcut moves the active cell to cell A1?
The Ctrl+Home keys
What is text data?
A combination of alphanumerical characters that form words and sentences (called a text string)
How do you enter two lines of text within a cell?
Enter the first line of text, press the Alt+Enter keys, and then type the second line of text.
Cell A4 contains "May 3,2010"; why doesn't Excel consider this entry a text string?
Because it is a date; all dates are number formatted to appear in standard date formats.
Explain the difference between clearing a row and deleting a row.
Clearing a row removes only the contents of the row, deleting a row removes the contents and the row.
Describe the two types of cell ranges in Excel.
Adjacent cell ranges contain rectangular blocks of cells; nonadjacent cell ranges contain a collection of adjacent cell ranges.
What is the range reference for the block of cells from A3 through G5 and J3 through M5?
A3:G5;J3:M5
What formula would you enter to add the values in cells B4, B5, and B6? What function would you enter to achieve the same result?
=B4+B5+B6; =SUM(B4:B6)
How do you rename a worksheet?
Double-click the sheet tab, and then type a new name on the sheet tab.
Describe four ways of viewing the content of an Excel workbook.
Normal view shows the columns and rows of the worksheet. Page Layout view shows the layout of the worksheet as it appears on a page. Page Break Preview shows the page breaks within the worksheet. Formula view shows formulas rather than the values returned by formulas.
Why would you scale a worksheet?
To force a worksheet to print on one page.
How do you display the formulas used in a worksheet?
Press the Ctrl+` keys to switch to formula view.
How are page breaks indicated in Page Break Preview?
As dotted lines.
What is the difference between a serif font and a sans serif font?
Serif fonts have extra decorative fonts at the end of each character. Sans serif fonts do not include these decorative strokes.
What is the difference between a standard color and a theme color?
Theme colors are colors that belong to a workbook's basic design, giving the elements in the workbook a uniform appearance. A standard color is always available to every workbook regardless of which themes might be in use.
What is the General number format.
The default Excel number format that displays numbers just as they're entered.
Why are dates right-aligned within a worksheet cell by default?
Dates are formatted numeric values and, as such, are right-aligned in cells.
The range A1:C5 is merged into a single cell. What is the cell reference of this merged cell?
A1
Where can you access all the formatting options for worksheet cells?
Open the Format Cells dialog box.
You want the range A1:A3 on all the worksheets in your workbook to be formatted the same way. Discuss two methods of applying the same format to different ranges.
You can use the Format Painter to copy and paste the format from one range to another, or you can define a style for the different ranges.
What is the absolute cell reference for B21? What are the two mixed references?
Absolute cell reference is $B$21. Mixed cell references are $B21 and B$21.
Cell B10 contains the formula =B1+B2. What formula is entered if this formula is copied and pasted into cell C20?
=C11+C12
Cell B10 contains the formula =$B1+B$2. What formula is entered if this formula is copied and pasted into cell C20?
=$B11+C$2
Cell B10 contains the formula =AVERAGE($A1$A5). What formula is entered if this formula is copied and pasted into cell C20?
=AVERAGE($A11:$A15)
What are optional arguments? What happens if you do not include an optional argument in a function?
Optional arguments are not required in a function. If not included, Excel assumes a default value for the argument.
What formula should you enter to add the numbers in the range B1:B10?
=SUM(B1:B10)
The range of a set of values is defined as the maximum value minus the minimum value. What formula would you enter to calculate the range of the values in B1:B10?
=MAX(B1:B10)-MIN(B1:B10)
What formula would you enter to calculate the ratio of the maximum value in the range B1:B10 to the minimum value?
=MAX(B1:B10)/MIN(B1:B10)
How do you use AutoFill to copy a set of cell values, but not the formatting?
Drag the fill handle over the selected range, click the AutoFill Options button, and then click Fill Without Formatting.
The first three selected values in a series are 3, 6, and 9. What are the next three values that will be inserted using AutoFill.
12, 15, 18
Cell A5 contains the text Mon. If you select the cell and drag the fill handle over the range A6:A8, what text will be entered in those cells?
Cell A6 displays the text Tue, cell A7 displays Wed, and cell A8 displays Thu.
If cell A3 is greater than cell A4, you want to display the text "OK"; otherwise, you want to display the text string "RETRY". What formula accomplishes this?
=IF(A3>A4, "OK", "RETRY")
What formula do you use to display the current date?
=TODAY()
What formula do you use to display the current date and time?
=NOW()
You want to take out a loan for $130,000. The interest on the loan is 5% compounded monthly. You intend to pay back the loan in 20 years. What formula do you enter to calculate the monthly payment required to pay off the loan under those conditions?
=PMT(0.05/12, 12*20, 130000)
What financial function do you use to determine how payment periods are required to pay off a loan?
NPER
What are the three components to a data series?
The series name, series values, and category values.
In what two locations can a chart be placed?
In a chart sheet or embedded in a worksheet
What is the difference between the chart area and the plot area?
The chart area contains the entire chart, including the plot area. The plot area contains the region of the chart in which the data values are plotted.
A data series contains values divided into 10 categories. Which chart would be better for displaying this data: a pie chart or a column chart? Why?
A column chart is more appropriate because there are so many categories; pie charts make it difficult to compare one category to another.
Explain how 3D charts can lead to a false interpretation of the data. What can you do to correct the problem?
Objects that are rendered as more distant from the eye will appear smaller, reducing their significance in the chart. To avoid confusion, 3D charts should include data labels explicitly identifying the vales associated with different data markers.
What are the major tick marks, minor tick marks, and gridlines?
A major tick mark matches each entry on the chart axis. Minor tick marks further divide the space between the major tick marks. Gridlines extend the tick marks into the plot area.
What is a bar chart?
A bar chart is similar to a column chart except that the length of the bars, rather than the height of the columns, is used to indicate the data value.
How do you rescale a chart axis?
Click the Axes button in the Axes group on the Chart Tools Layout tab, select the axis you want to rescale, and then click the More Options button. Enter the new axis scale in the Axis Options of the Format Axis dialog box, specifying the minimum and maximum value of the new scale and the space between the minor and major tick marks.
