Selective Permeability

The cell has control over what comes in and what goes out.

Phospholipid Bilayer

In a biological membrane, the phospholipids are organized into a bilayer, which serves as the framework in which the other components of the membrane are embedded.

Transport Proteins

Proteins that create tunnels through the plasma membrane.

Fluid Mosaic Model

The organization of individual molecules floating on the surface of the plasma membrane, creating a pattern.

Diffusion

The net movement of particles from an area where there are more particles of the substance to an area where there are fewer particles.

Dynamic Equilibrium

A chemical equilibrium between a forward reaction and the reverse reaction where therate of the reactions are equal

Facilitated Diffusion

The process of spontaneous passive transport (as opposed to active transport) of molecules or ions across a biological membrane via specific transmembrane integral proteins.

Osmosis

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.

Hypotonic Solution

If a cell is placed in a solution that has a lower concentration of dissolved substances, the cell is in a hypotonic solution.

Hypertonic Solution

Is one with a higher concentration of solutes outside the cell than inside the cell. When a cell is immersed into a hypertonic solution, the tendency is for water to flow out of the cell in order to balance the concentration of the solutes

Active Transport

The movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy.

Endocytosis

The taking in of matter by a living cell by invagination of its membrane to form a vacuole

Exocytosis

A process by which the contents of a cell vacuole are released to the exterior through fusion of the vacuole membrane with the cell membrane.

Homeostasis

A cell's survival depends on maintaining balance.

Polar

Pertaining to a compound exhibiting polarity or dipole moment, that is a compound bearing a partial positive charge on one side and a partial negative chargeon the other.

Non polar

Pertaining to a compound that is nonionic or does not dissociate into ions.

Hydrophollic

Having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or be wetted by water

Hydrophobic

Tending to repel or fail to mix with water.

Isotonic Solution

A solution that has the same salt concentration as cells and blood. Isotonic solutions are commonly used as intravenously infused fluids in hospitalized patients.
