MAMMALIAN BASIC TISSUE CATEGORIES; [5]

- Epithelial

- Connective

- Muscle

- Nervous

Some specialised tissues do not easily fit into these categories, ie. blood.

HISTOLOGY

The study of the microscopic structure of tissues.

EPITHELIAL; [6]

- Closely packed, little/no intracellular material (space between them)

- Non-vascular (no blood flowing through)

- Cover internal + external surfaces, line cavities and ducts and form secretory portion of most glands

- Usually supported by basement membrane which separates it from underlying connective tissue

- 2 categories: glandular epithelia and surface epithelia

- Eg.

- Skin, lining of lungs, gut, etc, salivary glands etc

CHARACTERISTICS OF EPITHELIUM

layers [3] and shape [4]

Layers:

- Single: simple

- Single (looks multi): pseudostratified

- Multiple: stratified

Shape:

- Squamous: Flat:

- Cuboidal: Square: Cuboidal

- Columnar: Tall

Combinations fit particular function of tissue

SIMPLE SQUAMOUS; [2]

- Alveoli/glomerulus (filter blood to form urine)

- Thin and flat, small SA, easy to diffuse oxygen across

SIMPLE CUBOIDAL; [2]

- Kidney tubules/ducts

- Function includes secretion and absoption
