The Cell

The smallest functional and structural unit of an organism and the basic unit of all living organisms.
That are the 3 essential parts of a cell?

1. the cytoplasm

2. the bounding membrane

3. the nucleus

What is cytoplasm and what does it contain?

The protoplasm of the body of the cell that surrounds the nucleus. It contains cytosol, organelles, inclusions, and most of the cell's ribonucleic acid.
What is protoplasm?

The primary component cells.
What is the cell membrane?
The external boundary of a cell that separates it from extracellular fluid and other cells.
What is the nucleus?

The largest organelle inside the cell, which directs the cells activity. It also plays a vital role in cell growth, reproduction and metabolism.
How do cells interact with other bodily fluids?

Through the interchange of substances.
What are the methods by which substances can travel across the cell membrane?
diffusion, osmosis, active transport, endocytosis, and filtration
Diffusion
The movement of lipid soluble substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration until equilibrium is reached.
Facilitated Diffusion
The movement of non lipid soluble substances move through protein channels in the cell membrane.
Channel Proteins and Carrier Proteins

They carry non-lipid soluble substances across the plasma membrane by facilitated diffusion.
Osmosis

The passive transport or movement of water across the semipermeable cell membrane. Moves from lower concentration to higher concentration.
