3 parts of cell theory
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. All cells derive from pre-existing cells.
3. Cells are basic functional units of life.
Robert Hooke
1665 observed cork cells under compound light microscope.
Coined the word 'cell'
Anton van Leewenhoek (Dutch)
1st man to see blood cells,
1st to describe unicellular org.: protozoa, algae, yeasts & bacteria
Theory of spontaneous generation (Early Greeks until 17th century)
Living matter arose from non-living matter or other species e.g. worms from soil/ circle of mushrooms from tree base
2 main experiments which disproved cell theory
1. Redi's Experiment 1668
2. Pasteru's Experiment 1860
Redi's Experiment 1668
(worms & maggots not from meat but live parents)
Meat in 2 flasks. 1 exposed to flies, other covered in netting. Maggots only in open flask.
Pasteur's Experiment 1860
nutrient broths into flasks with curve neck shape. broths 1st boiled. 1 neck broken. microbial growth in flask with contact to air. conclude: new life carried by dust particles in air.
biogenesis
idea that all life originates from other life (replaces theory of spontaneous generation)
Introduction of electron microscopes
higher magnification, higher resolution, high cost, use of magnets to focus electrons, dead specimens only (artefacts appearance from killing process?)
Living things (MR GREEN)
Move & made of cells
Respire
Grow, make more cells
Reproduce
Excrete
Excitability (react to surroundings)
Nutrition (require food & water)
Virus a living thing?
No. Not made of cells. Can only reproduce if overtakes a cell.
