What are human and animal cells surrounded by?
an outer cell membrane
What marks the boundary between the outside and the inside of the cell?
plasma membrane
What is necessary to the life of the cell?
The plasma membrane integrity and function
If cells are not happy..
you're not happy
What is the plasma membrane?
outer surface of the cell, made up of a phospholipid bilayer with attached or embedded protiens.
What can go through the protien channel?
non-solubule lipids
Why can only non-soluble lipids go through the protein channel?
If they were soluble, then they would just dissolve in the phosphoLIPID bilayer.
What are the features of the phospholipid molecule?
They contain a polar head and a non polar tail
What happens when phospholipids are placed in water?
They naturally form a spherical bilayer, the polar heads are hydrophilic and they position themselves to face toward the water environment outside and inside the cell.
the nonpolar tails are hydrophobic and they turn inward toward one another, where there is no water.
What contributes to the central core of the cell membrane being non-polar?
the non-polar tails are hydrophobic and they turn intward toward one another, where there is no water, creating a non-polar central core of the plasma membrane.
What does hydrophilic mean? What part of the phospholipid molecule is hydrophilic?
Attracted to water, the polar heads.
What forms the spherical bilayer of the plasma membrane?
When phospholipids are placed in water
