Cell membrane / plasma membrane
Structure - made of lipids and proteins, it is the same on plant and animal and bacterial cells.
Function - regulates movement of substances in and out, it also has receptor cells on the surface soit can respond to chemicals like hormaones.
Rigid Cell Wall
Structure - made of cellulose
Function - It supports plat cells
Nucleus
Structure - surrounded by a nuclear envelope (double membrane)
Function - the pores alow substances to pass in and out of the nucleus.
Nucleolus
Structure - not an organelle but a dense patch made of chromatin (proteins and DNA)
Function - makes ribosomes.
Lysosome
Structure - a round organelle with no clear structure.
Function - Contains digestive enzymes that are used to digest inv microorg. or worn out cell components.
Ribsome
Structure - very small found either floating free or attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum.
Function - the site where proteins are made.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
Structure - a system of membranes enclosing a fluid filled space. The surface covered with ribosomes.
Function - Folds and processes proteins made at ribosomes.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Structure - similar to RER but with no ribosomes.
Function - synthesises and processes lipids.
Golgi Apparatus
Structure - Fluid filled flattened sacs with vesicles seen at the edges.
Function - Processes and packages lipids and proteins and makes lysosomes.
Mitochondria
Structure - oval shaped, double membrane, inner membrane folded to make cristea. Enzymes inside the matrix.
Fuction - Site of aerobic resp where ATP is found.
Chloroplasts
Structure - flattened double membrane. Membranes inside called thylakoid membranes that stack up to form grana which are linked by lamellae.
Function - site of photosynthesis.
Centriole
Structure - small hollow cylinders containing ring of microtubules.
Function - involved with the separation of chromosomes during cell division.
