Chromatin
The thin strands floating directly ahead in the nucleus. Containing genetic material, the instructions for directing the cell's functions. RNA is the copy of genes.
Nucleolus
A Nucleolus is where ribosomes are made.
Nuclear Envelope
The Nuclear Envelope is what surrounds the Nucleus. The Nuclear Envelope protects the Nucleus. Materials pass in and out through the pores.
Cell Wall
The Cell Wall is a rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. A plant's cell wall helps to protect and support the cell.
Cell Membrane
The next barrier after the Cell Wall is the Cell Membrane. All cells have a Cell Membrane. The Cell Membrane controls what substances come into and out of the cell.
Mitochondria
The Mitochondria is a rod-shaped structure. Mitochondria are know as the "power house" of the cell, because they convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The Endoplasmic Reticulum's passageways carry proteins and other materials from one part of te cell to another.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes function as factories to produce proteins. Found on endoplasmic reticulum.
Golgi Bodies
The Golgi Bodies receive proteins and other newly formed materials from the Endoplasmic Reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell.
Chloroplasts
Chloroplasts capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell.
Vacuoles
Vacuoles are the storage areas of cells. The Vacuoles are water-filled sacs. Food, waste and water. Plant cells have one Large one.
Lysosomes
Lysosomes are small, round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials in the cell.
Nucleus
The Nucleus directs all of the cell's activities, including reproduction.
Cytoplasm
Includes a gel-like fluid in which many different organelles are found.
Organelle
tiny structure that has a particular function.
