What is a cell membrane?
double layer of phospholipids that encloses cell
Where is a cell membrane found?
both animal/plant
both prokaryotic cell/eukaryotic cell
What is a cell wall?
protective layer external to plasma membrane in plant cells, bacteria, fungi, and some protists; protects cell and helps maintain its shape
Where is a cell wall found?
plant cell
both prokaryotic cell/eukaryotic cell
What is cytoplasm?
This jelly-like substance, composed mostly of water, seperates the nucleus from the cell membrane, and is where all other cell organelles are found. It is filled with protein fibers called microtubules that make up the cytoskeleton which aids in the cell's movement and gives the cell its shape.
Where is the cytoplasm found?
both plant/animal cells
both prokaryotic/eukaryotic cells
What is the nucleus?
An organelle that is enclose din a double membrane, contains DNA, and communicates with the surrounding cytosol via numerous nuclear pores.
Where is the nucleus found?
both plant/animal cells
eukaryotic cells
What is the nuclear membrane?
The nuclear membrane is the double membrane that surrounds the nucleus within a cell. Its outer part is continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the nucleus?
an organelle that is enclosed in a double membrane, contains DNA, and communicates with the surrounding cytosol via numerous pores
Where is the nucleus found?
both plant and animal cells
eukaryote cells
What is the nuclear membrane?
double membrane that surrounds nucleus within cell, outer part is continuous with endoplasmic reticulum
Where is the nuclear membrane found?
plant/animal cells
eukaryote cells
What is the nucleolus?
produces ribosomes, which move out of nucleus and take positions on the rough endoplasmic reticulum where they are critical in protein synthesis
Where is the nucleolus found?
-both plant/animal cells
-eukaryotic cells
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
a network of membrane bound vesicles and tubules that appears smooth and functions in lipid/steroid hormone synthesis and break down of lipid soluble toxins in liver cells
Where is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum found?
both plant/animal cells
eukaryotic cells
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
interconnected membranous sacs, studded with ribosomes, constructs membrane from phospholipids and proteins
Where is the rough endoplasmic reticulum found?
both plant/animal cells
eukaryotic cells
Where is the rough endoplasmic reticulum found?
-both plant/animal cells
-eukaryotic cells
What are ribosomes?
functions as sites of protein synthesis in cytoplasm
Where are ribosomes found?
both plant/animal cells
both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
A stack of membranes that collects and modifies chemical compounds, packaging and distributing the molecules that are produced in one part of the cell but used by another part, or those to be exported to the outside of the cell.
Where is the Golgi Apparatus found?
both plant/animal cells
both prokaryotic/eukaryotic cells
What is a vesicle?
a relatively small intracellular membrane-enclosed sac that stores or transports substances
Where are vesicles found?
both plant/animal cells
eukaryotic cells
What are vacuoles?
a membrane-enclosed sac that plays roles in digestion and release of waste and is part of the endomembrane system
Where are vacuoles found?
-plant cells
-eukaryotic cells
What are lysosomes?
a digestive organelle that contains enzymes that digest the cell's food and wastes
Where are lysosomes found?
animal cells
eukaryotic cells
What is mitochondria?
an organelle in eukaryotic cells where cellular respiration occurs
Where are mitochondrias found?
both plant/animal cells
eukaryotic cells
What are chloroplasts?
the organelle that is enclisdd by two concentric membranes, absorbs sunlight and uses it to power the synthesis of sugars. They give plants their green color.
Where are chloroplasts found?
-plant cells
-eukaryotic cells
