Plasma membranes

●found around cells and some organelles

● they are partially permeable barriers

made up of phospholipids in a bilayer & proteins

●Under an electron microscope you can see the bilayer as 2 dark bands & the distance across the membrane is 7 nm

Fluid-Mosiac model

The molecules in a membrane are not bonded together so there is some movement but it is relatively stable due to the nature of the phospholipid

Singer & Nicholson proposed the model in 1972

Fluid: phospholipids and proteins move around each other

Mosaic: Arrangement of proteins within the phospholipid bilayer

Plasma membrane Components

Role of membrane

Within Cell:

●Separate cell components from cytoplasm (COMPARTMENTALISTION)

Holding the components of metabolic pathways in place (eg mitochondria)

On surface

●Separate cell content from outside environment

●Cell recognition & signalling

●Regulating transport of materials into/out of cells
