What is a tight junction?

Strands of transmembrane proteins that fuse adjacent cells together.

Water tight - eg. Stomach, bladder what is an

What is an adherens junction?

An adhesion belt made of plaque that surrounds the cell.

Transmembrane glycoproteins (cadherens) join the cells.

Good for keeping epithelial surfaces from slipping out of position.

What is a desmosome?

Similar to a spot weld, it incorporates plaque, cadherins and the cytoskeleton.

Keeps cells from being pulled apart and contributes to tissue stability.

Neighboring cell.

What is a hemideamosone?

Half a desmosome- anchors cells to the basement membrane.

What is a gap junction?

Membrane proteins form a tunnel between cells (connexons)- small substances like ions can pass through.

Allows cells to communicate with each other, share nutrients, transfer chemical/electrical signals.
