Mitosis
division of a cell's nucleus that produces two new cells with the same DNA
Meiosis
nuclear division that produces 4 cells with half the number of chromosomes (haploid), produces sperm and egg
Interphase
cell carries out its functions.Split into 3 phases: (G1)

(S)

(G2)

Metaphase
spindle fibers attach to centromeres. Chromosomes form a line in middle of cell
Telophase
2 nuclei are made. The spindle dissolves and the chromosomes uncoil.
Prophase
Membrane dissolves and chromosomes coil up. The spindle fibers then form
Anaphase
Chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of cell. Chromatids are now chromosomes
Cytokinesis
Last step in cell cycle. Cytoplasm splits and forms two of the same cell
Chromosome
The DNA and its proteins
Chromatid
The two copies of DNA that make up a chromosome during the process of mitosis
Centromere
Place on chromosome where the chromatids are attached
Zygote
First diploid cell containing DNA from both parents
Gamete
Cells formed by Meiosis that contain the organisms haploid number of chromosomes.
Crossing over
when parts of a chromatid on a homologous chromosome switch places with a part of another chromatid on the opposite homologous chromosome
Spindle fibers
structures in a cell that are involved in moving chromosomes during the division of the cell.
Diploid
Cell that contains both sets of homologous chromosomes
Cancer
Unregulated cell growth
Haploid
cell that contains one set of chromosomes
Somatic cell
all body cells besides germ cells and gametes. produces identical cells in mitosis.
DNA
stores genetic information in gene form
Autosomes
chromosomes that don't determine the sex of an individual
Homologous chromosomes
pair of chromosomes that carry the same genes
Spindle
structure that binds to the chromosome and separates during cell division
Centrosome
organelle that produces the spindle during cell division
Asexual reproduction
offspring is identical to parent
Sexual reproduction
offspring are genetically different from parents
fertilization
the action or process of fertilizing an egg
ovules
female sex cells

pollen
male sex cells
Interkinesis
Interkinesis is a period of rest that cells of some species enter during meiosis
