Gap Phase 1 |
Cell grows and new organelles and proteins are made. |
G1 |
G1 Checkpoint |
Cell checks chemicals needed for replication are present and for any damage to the DNA before the next phase. |
Chemical... |
Synthesis (cell cycle) |
Cell replicates it's DNA ready to divide. |
Gap Phase 2 |
Cell keeps growing and proteins needed for cell division are made. |
G2 checkpoint |
Checks all the DNA has been replicated without any damage. |
Mitosis |
A series of division stages- prophase, metaphase, anaphase ane telophase |
Interphase |
Where the cell prepares to divide, DNA is unravelled and replicated, organelles replicated and ATP production is increased. |
Everything but mitosis. |
Prophase |
The chromosomes condense, the centrioles state moving and create the spindle and the nuclear envelope breaks down, chromosomes lie free in the cytoplasm. |
Stage 1 of mitosis. |
Metaphase |
The chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell and become attached to the spindle by their centromere. At the metaphase checkpoint the cell checks all the chromosomes are attached to the spindle. |
Stage 2 of mitosis. |
Anaphase |
The centromeres divide separating each pair of sister chromatids. The spindles contract, pulling the chromatids to opposite ends of the cell. |
Stage 3 of mitosis. |
Telophase |
Chromatids reach the opposite poles on the spindle, they uncoil and become long and thin again. They are now chromosomes again, a nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes so there are now two nuclei. |
Stage 4 of mitosis. |
Cytokinesis |
The cytoplasm divides. A cleavage furrow forms to divide the cell membrane. There are now two genetically identical daughter cells. It is separate to mitosis. |
Happens during Anaphase and telophase. |
