Name two ways that bridges solves the growing Ethernet congestion problems when they were first introduced.
1. They reduced the number of collisions. 2. They added bandwidth to the network.
How do bridges build the bridge table?
They examine the source MAC address of incoming frames. If the MAC address is not already in the table, the bridge adds it along with the interface in which the frame arrived.
What are the three kinds of internal processing variations used by Cisco switches?
Store-and-forward, cut-through, and fragment-free.
Describe store-and-forward processing.
The switch fully receives all bits in the frame, checks the FCS, and then forwards it.
Describe cut-through processing.
The switch performs the address table lookup as soon as the destination address field in the header is received. It starts forwarding the first bits before the final bits are received.
Describe fragment-free processing.
The switch waits for the first 64 bytes to be received before starting to forward. Most collisions are detected within this period, so frames in error because of a collision should not be forwarded.
What logic does STP use to decide whether a port should be in forwarding or blocking state?
All the root switch's ports are set in forwarding. Each root port on all the other switches are set in forwarding. Each LAN's designated port is put in forwarding. All other ports are set in blocking.
What temporary states does a port go through before STP settles on forwarding or blocking?
Listening, then learning, and then the final state. The whole process takes around 50 seconds.
