I Am Who Am
God is the fullness of Being, and of every perfection, without origin and without end.
metaphysical substance of God
in God essence and existence coincide
perfection =
that is perfect in which nothing is lacking which acc. to its nature it should possess.
perfections =
- any good possessed by a being
- those which are not necessarily creaturely (not necessarily limited, ie, "goodness," "intelligence," "truth,") can be attributed to God
absolutely simple perfections - why called?
- absolutely = b/c in God they unite in themselves all possible excellences and excludes all deficiencies
- simple = b/c they are identical with God in his simplicity
attributes - conceptual definition
the attributes or properties of God are perfections which, acc. to our analogical mode of thinking, proceed from the metaphysical substance of God and belong to it.
- the divine attributes are really identical among themselves and with the divine essence (ie, God isn't good - He is Goodness)
attributes - textbook definition
an absolutely simple perfection existing in God necessarily
attributes - mixed?
only "mixed" in analogical speech (goodness, beauty, etc.). Ultimately, they are all "One."
- we look at God's attributes as many only because of our limited understanding - but in God they are all one and are identical with His essence.
- the distinction between the attributes is neither "real," nor "purely mental," but rather "virtual"
the attributes of divine being =
- absolute perfection
- infinity
- simplicity (absolutely simple)
- unicity (God is one)
- truth (the True God)
- goodness - possesses everything that accords with his nature
- immutability - doesn't change
- eternity - the eternal present
- immensity (immeasurability) - 1 - immensity - 2 - omnipresence
attribute of God: Truth - 3 senses of truth:
- moral truth (in saying, acting) - God isn't a liar
- logical truth (in knowing) - God is the supreme Truth
- ontological truth (in being) - God's infinite being conforms perfectly to His divine knowledge of Himself
as ontological truth is "being" in relation to "intellect," so ontological goodness is.....
"being" in relation to "will"
The perfection of divine knowledge - list: (5)
1 - infinite, omniscient
2 - purely and simply actual (knows all in one simple act)
3 - subsistent (doesn't possess knowledge, but "is" knowledge)
4 - comprehensive (comprehends Himself)
5 - independent of extra-Divine things (they are not the cause of His knowledge, but the aim)
primary and formal object of the Divine Knowing is....
Himself
secondary and material object of the Divine knowing are....
extra-Divine things
God knows.... (3)
1 - the purely possible
2 - all the real
3 - the conditioned future free acts
the perfection of the divine will: (3 characteristics)
1 - infinite
2 - pure act
3 - the affections of God
pure act =
no transition from potency to act, but one single successionless act of willing
affections of God =
= purely spiritual manifestations of His volition
- the basic affection is love
- also, they are infinite intensifications, of joy or bliss, or hate of abomination
the object of the divine volition: (2)
- the divine self-love
- God's love for his creatures
physical evil - in relation to God's will
- wills it indirectly to bring about a higher good
moral evil - in relation to God's will
God never causes or wills moral evil
physical properties of the Divine Will: (3)
1 - necessity and freedom - loves himself necessarily, but creates freely
2 - omnipotence - power
3 - God's apparent powerlessness
moral attributes of the Divine will (2)
1 - justice
2 - mercy
justice - 4 types
1 - legal - directs members of society to promote common good
2 - commutative - directs members of society in dealings with e/o
3 - distributive - re: head of a society
4 -
