Abolitionist
The term refers to a person who was in favor of abolishing a law, custom, or institution. In the U.S.(in the 1800's), these people were in favor of doing away with slavery.
Agrarian
This term refers to the cultivation and/or ownership of land...related to agriculture and the growing of "Cash Crops". The South had a mainly agrarian economy, relying on "cash crops", like sugar, rice tobacco, and of course, "King Cotton".
The Amistad
This term refers to the Spanish slave ship-recovered off the coast of New York, in 1839. The Africans on board had revolted and killed some of their Spanish captors. The court case involving these people went all the way to the U.S Supreme Court, with former president, John Quincy Adams, helping to defend the Africans. The court decided in favor of the Africans, allowing them to return to Africa, despite President Martin Van Buren favoring that they be returned to Africa.
Annexation
This term refers to adding on or attaching a smaller object to a larger one...to incorporate into a country, state(ect.) the territory of another country, state(ect.)
Example: The U.S annexed Texas, in 1845
Antebellum
This term refers to the time period before a war...in America it refers to the time before the American Civil War.
