A species may be overexploited. That means humans have made use of the animal to the extent that there are not many of the animal left. Whales were hunted to the brink of extinction. Now there are whaling laws which prevent hunters from killing them. Laws help a species repopulate itself over years so that it is no longer an endangered species.
