Proclamation of 1763

This order said that colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. Britain gave Native Americans rights to that land.

Sugar Act

This act taxed imported sugar, coffee, and cloth. Merchants avoided the tax by smuggling these goods.

Stamp Act

This act taxed anything printed on paper. Colonists were upset because they did not think they should be taxed because they weren't represented in Parliament.

Townshend Act

This act taxed tea, glass, lead, paints, and paper. Colonists were angry and threatened violence against British tax officials.

Boston Massacre

A crowd in Boston was arguing with a British soldier and started throwing snowballs. More soldiers arrived and shots were fired. Five colonists were killed.

Tea Act

This act allowed the East India Company to sell tea in America at a very low price. This cheap tea was still taxed and colonists refused to buy it.

Boston Tea Party

Sons of Liberty dressed up as Mohawk Indians and boarded a ship in Boston Harbor and threw the tea into the harbor. The British closed Boston Harbor and passed the Intolerable Acts.

First Continental Congress

Colonists held a meeting in Philadelphia to discuss the Intolerable Acts. The congress wrote letters to the British government saying colonists should have the same freedoms as other British citizens

Battle at Lexington

British soldiers met a group of Minutemen in Lexington and the first shots of the revolution were fired. Eight colonists were killed and nine were wounded.
