Describe Mexico City's main problem with pollution

The city lies 2,240m above sea level. Low oxygen levels lead to incomplete fuel combustion and high emissions of carbon monoxide. Intense sunlight then leads to higher than normal smog levels. Smog prevents the sun from heating the atmosphere enough to penetrate the inversion layer blanketing the city.

What solution did the Govt. introduce in 1990?

Air quality improvement programs. This involved a 1-weekday ban on private car use. On days of high pollution this ban extends to every 2nd day and some manufacturing activities are curtailed. Vehicles must also be certified every 6 months.

2. 'Travel by Bike' initiative- 300km of bike routes created. 9 rapid transport corridors. 200km of restricted lanes for buses. Traditional taxis replaced with electric cars.

3. Work on urban ravines- reduce impact of heavy rain. Benefits low income groups.
