Salivary Glands basics:
-Submandibular 70% flow, 80% serous
- Parotid 25% salivary flow, 95% serous -Sublingual 5% flow, 30% serous, 70% mucous |
Saliva
- mixture of proteins, glycoproteins, glycosaminoglycans, electrolytes and water.
Saliva is a secretion not a flitrate. Functions to moisten, lubricate and initiate digestion of food. -main enzyme is salivary a-amylase. Saliva also contains secretory IgA. |
Salivary Glands: Main features
-serous acini +myoepithelial cells.
-mucous tubule -serous demilune at end of mucous tubule. -Intercalated duct -Stiated/interlobular duct *ionic modification *capillary counterflow. -parasympathetic > voluminous saliva -sympathetic > viscous saliva |
Lubrication. Why?
-Mastication
-Swallowing -Facilitates speech -proline-rich proteins |
Digestion. What?
-a-amylase (starch)
-linguinal lipase (lipid) -R-protein (haptocorrin) Vit B12 absorption. |
Protection. How?
-Oral and Dental health
*Lysozyme *IgA *proline rich proteins. *Was and neutralise food. (fluid plus bicarb) *Binding Pathogens (mucus) -mechanical protection of mucosa. |
Xerostomia
"Dry Mouth"
-Salivary gland hypofunction -Dental caries, ulceration, infections and discomfort. -Difficulties with speech, taste, chewing and swallowing. -Treatment: *stimulate residual saliva *artificial saliva |
Salivary fluid secretion
primary acinar fluid
-isotonic, plasma-like -mucin glycoprotein secretion -a-amylase and lipase secretion. Secondary ductal modification. -Lysozyme and immunoglobulin secretion -Cl- (reabsorption) exchange HCO3- (secretion) - Na+ (reabsorption) and K+(secretion) -Ducts impermeable to water. |
Neuronal Control of Saliva
Autonomic Nervous System
-Parasympathetic (ACh/VIP) *CN 7 sublingual and submandibular *CN 9aprotid *Profuse secretion of watery saliva. -Sympathetic (NA) *small volume rich in proteins and mucus. -Cephalic (unconditioned and conditioned) *Food or irritating substance in mouth. (reflex) *Pavlov |
