What are osteoblasts? What does it secrete?
The "building" cell, they secrete the initial semisolid form of bone matrix, called "osteoid."
What is an osteoid?
What the osteoblasts secrete, it later calcifies to become bone.
When do osteoblasts differentiate into osteocytes?
When they get stuck in the matrix (osteoid) they secrete, they differentiate into an osteocyte.
What is the function of the osteocyte?
They maintain the bone matrix and detect mechanical stress on a bone.
When does the osteoblast know to grow more bone?
When the osteocyte detects the stress, the information is communicated to the osteoblasts.
What are the 3 characteristics of the osteoclast?
Large, multinuclear, and phagocytic
Where did the osteoclasts derrive from?
Appeared to be derived from bone marrow cells similar to those that produce monocytes in blood.
What is the osteoclast's role?
Break down bone in a process called osteolysis.
What is osteolysis?
The process of breaking down bone.
What is meant by balancing bone growth by building and breaking down?
Osteoclasts remove matrix, osteoblasts add it. If blast is more active, the bone becomes stronger, if clast is more active, the bone becomes weaker.
