What is Angle of Repose? |
Is the maximum slope angle of non-cohesive material. Usually a cargo of less than 35' angle of repose is at risk of shifting. i.e. Grain/Granular Cargo. |
What is Transportable Moisture Limit? |
Is the maximum moisture content of the cargo which is considered safe for carriage. Usually determined as 90% of the Flow Moisture Point. |
What is the Flow Moisture Point? |
Is the percentage moisture content of a cargo, at which flow state may develop. |
Flow State? |
This is the state that occurs when a mass of granular material is saturated with a liquid, to the extent that when subjected to external forces it will behave like a liquid. |
What is Stowage Factor? |
This is the figure which expresses the number of cubic meters which one tonne of cargo will occupy. (M3/Tonne) |
What are the groups of bulk cargoes? |
Group A : Cargoes which may liquefy Group B : Cargoes with Chemical Hazard Group C : Cargoes which won't Liquefy nor posses a chemical hazard. |
What is MHB? |
Cargoes which may pose a chemical hazard other than those listed in the IMDG Code. |
What are the hazards of bulk cargoes? |
Oxygen Depletion - Grains/Coal/Timber Asphyxiation Corrosive |
Bulk Cargo Information Required by the ship? |
Shipping Name Cargo Group IMO Hazard Class UN Number Quantity Stowage Factor Trimming Requirements Angle of Repose Moisture Content Transportable Moisture Limits Likelihood of the formation of a wet base Toxic or Flammable Gasses that may be admitted by the cargo. Flammability, Toxicity, Corrosiveness and Oxygen Depletion Self Heating Properties Radioactive Properties Any other Information |
What is the BLU Manual? |
It was created to minimize the losses of Bulk Carriers by introducing proper procedures for loading and unloading which must be followed by both the ship and the Terminal. Port Authorities have the right to stop operations that they deem to pose a risk. |
Items normally included in a ship/shore safety checklist. |

Shore contact person identified Adequate crew on board Adequate personnel in terminal Bunkering operations agreed Terminal Advised of any repairs Reporting damage agreed Copy of Port Terminal Regulations Details of Local Emergency Services Cargo information given to Master Is the Hold Atmosphere Safe? Loading Rate Information Emergency Stop Procedure Agreed Holds Easily Identifiable Trimming Requirements been agreed Cleaning procedures been agreed Procedure for completion agreed Terminal Advised of Departure Preparation Time |
Who Does the Grain Code apply to? |
It applies to all vessels irrespective of size engaged in the carriage of Grain in Bulk to which part C of SOLAS Chapter VI of SOLAS. The Term Grain covers Wheat, Maize, Corn, Oats, Rye, Barley, Rice, Pulses, Seeds and processed forms thereof. |
What is Gross Tonnage? |
It is the volumetric measurement of the ship |
What is Gross Tonnage? |
It is the volumetric measurement of the ship |
What is Nett Tonnage? |
It is the volumetric measurement of all cargo carrying spaces on board. And is always less than the Gross Tonnage |
