What are Scholssberg's four types of transitions?
Anticipated (high school graduation)
Unanticipated (being fired)
Common hassles (long commute)
Non-events (not getting a promotion)
What is a transition?
Movement from one stage to another -- can be smooth or not.
What is a crisis?
A situation in which a person suddenly has to develop new methods of dealing with a problem that has arisen suddenly
What is another dimension that can be used to classify a transition? (Hopson & Adams)
Transitions (of any type) can be voluntary or involuntary
What are three common life strains on a person's career (Schollsberg)
1. Normative role transitions
2. Non-normative events
3. Persistent occupational problems
What are five types of normative transitions? (Louis)
Normative transitions are generally anticipated and voluntary.
1. entering/re-entering labor pool
2. taking different role in same organization
3. moving to another organization
4. changing professions
5. leaving the labor pool
What is a "boundaryless career" (Briscoe & Hall)
One in which there are frequent rotations, temporary assignments and transfers. More complex - in the nature of the work and relationships with co-workers (e.g. consultants)
Finally a concept that seems to fit what is REALLY happening in today's labor market!
What is a "protean career path" (Briscoe and Hall)
It's more an attitude than a path: individuals are self-directed & make choices based on personal values. Characterized by flexibility, adaptability and versatility; likely to be mobile within company and between companies
Very important in today's marketplace. However, if most Americans are S types this will be very hard on them. And, working alone is hard on E types
What is the Career Transitions Inventory
Assessment developed by Heppner, Multon & Johnston that assesses how well individuals believe they have made career transitions. Five subscales: (1) readiness; (2) confidence; (3) control; (4) perceived support and (5) decision independence
