Cardiovascular Functions
pumping system to supply all body tissues with O2 and nutrients and to transport cell waste for removal
Role in immune system
double walled sac around the heart
Pericardium
between the layers for lubrication
Pericardial fluid
3 layers
epicardium, myocardium-thickest and is made of muscle, supplied by coronary arteries and veins; endocardium-inner liing of heart, only part that touches blood
upper 2, receive blood
Atria
divides chambers
Septum
2 lower chambers, pump blood out
Ventricles
tip of the heart
Cardiac apex
control blood flow
Valves
betw. R atrium and R ventricle
Tricuspid
betw. R ventricle and pulmonary artery
Pulmonary semilunar valve
bicuspid valve, betw. L atrium and L ventricle
Mitral valve
betw. L vent. and the aorta
Aortic semilunar valve
includes blood flow to all parts of the body except lungs
Systemic circulation
Systemic circulation, O2
O2 rich blood flows out of the heart from L vent. into art. circ.
O2 poor blood returns blood to the R atrium thru the veins
Pulmonary Circ.
-flows betw. heart and lungs
-Flows from R vent. thru the pulmonary art. to the lungs
-In the lungs, waste material from body is exchanged for 02
-Pulnonary veins carry the O2 rich blood from the L atr.
Heartbeat
-Rate and regularity of the HB is determined by elect. impulses from nerves that stim. the myocardium of the heart (Conduction Sys.)
-These elect. impulses are controlled by the SA (Sinoatrial) node, AV (atrioventricular) node, and Bundle of His
SA Node
-found in the post. wall of R atr.
-starts basic rhythm of the HB, called the pacemaker
-start each wave of muscle contrac. of the heart, forcing blood into the vent. Impulse spread over to L atr. so they will contract in unison
AV Node
-located at the floor of the R atr., near the interatrial septum
-Transmits the impulses onto the Bundle of His
Bundle of His
-loc. in the intervent. septum
-carry the impulse to the R and L vent. and the Purkinje fibers, causing the vent. to contract in unison and forcing blood into the pulmonary art. and the aorta
1st caused by the closing of the tricuspid and mitral valves
Lubb sound
shorter and higher pitched, caused by the clowing of the semilunar valves in the aorta and the pulmonary art. as blood exits the heart
Dupp sound
