I studied the Republic of Cape Verde. It is an island nation that is located off the coast of Western Africa and consists of 10 islands.
What I studied
Three most interest interesting facts that I learned about Cape Verde are:
1. The entire country is about the size of Rhode Island. When you look at it on google maps, at first you only see water.
Three most interesting things I learned
2. Second - since the islands are so small, there is not a lot of cars on the road. There is also no industry. Without car exhaust and industry - there is no pollution, the ocean is crystal clear because the air quality is so good.
Three most interesting things I learned
3. Third - The thing that I thought was so interesting, was that music plays an important role in everyday life. Everyone sings, dances or plays an instrument.

My favorite part of academic fair this year was learning about the cool country where my uncle lives. He has lived in some really great places because of his job. He works for the foreign services department of the US Government, he is in charge of giving Visa's to foreigners that want to travel to the US. Cape Verde has been one of the coolest places he has lived so far.
Favorite part of AF.

Uncle Bob has also lived in Poland, Germany, Russia, Nigaria (Africa) and Cameroon (Africa).
The advice I would give to next year's 5th grade about academic fair is that they should pick a country that really interests them, and if they know someone that lives there - it makes it even more fun to learn about.
Advice for next year's 5th graders
For my project - my Uncle took pictures of people in Cape Verde. One of my favorites is the picture of President Fonseca (Cape Verde President) making a speech to the US, saying how sorry he is about the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy. I also love the picture of President and First Lady Obama with President Fonseca. My very favorite thing is the Cape Verde money, it is said like SHCUDO - $1 in US money equals about $82 in Cape Verde money.
