Where are the kidneys located
level of T12 and L3
What are the functions of the Kidneys
1)maintain homeostatis
2)fluid volume and balance
3)PH balance
4)hormone production
5)urine production
a- glomerulus filtration
b- tubular reabsorbtion of nutrition and electrolytes
c-tubular secretion of waste and toxins
What two horones do the kidneys produce
Erythropoietin- signals bone marrow to make more red blood cells
Prostaglandins- regulates blood pressure and water retention
What are the Ureters
A one-way system that leads from the renal pelvis to the bladder
Urinary Bladder
1- Micturition (to pee)
2- urine
Urethra
is the continuation of the neck of the bladder
Difference between the male and female urethra
Male is longer and thinner and more prone to blockages. In addition to urine it also carries sperm and seminal fluid during ejaculation.
The Females is shorter and straigher and carries urine only
What is a nephron
A Kidney cell. Basic funtional unit of the kidney
How many Neprons are found in a med. sized dog kidney
about 700k
What are the neprons composed of
Renal corpuscle, proximal convoluted tubule and the distal convoluted tubule
What is urine production governed by
glomerular fultration, tubular reabsorption and tubular secretion
What is the decide factor of water excretion or retention
sodium levels. the higher the sodium the more water is retained- the lower more is excreted
Describe the urinary system process
blood enters the glomerulus via the afferent glomerular arteriole to the capallaries which forces plasma into the bowmans capsule where it moves to the proximal convoluted tubule then the loop of henle to the distal convoluted tubule and then the collecting duct- from there is it passed to the ureters and then the bladder
Name two benefits of massage to the urinary system
1)Increases urine output
2)promotes excretion of wastes in the urine
