Distribution of calculus

Supragingival - above gingival margin, coronal to gingival margins

Subgingival - below gingival margin, apical to gingival margin in sulcus/pocket

Type of calc - dependant on how recently it was formed

Brushite - newly formed

Whitlockite - less than 6 months old

Hydroxyapatite- more than 6 months old

Two main theories of calc formation

Precipitation theory (increased pH, salts precipitated out of solution when it becomes more alkaline)

Nucleation Theory (mostly likely) some element in organic matrix acts as seeding agent, foci for calcification, growth of crystals

Define calculus

Hard deposit formed by the mineralisation of plaque and deposited on teeth or any hard structure

Not all plaque mineralises

Attachment of calc to tooth ...

Via pellicle

Treatment of calculus

Scaling

RSD

Problems with calculus

Plaque retention factor

May contain toxins (plaque) irritate gingival tissues

Patient can't remove it
