Why was Calamity Jane famous?

Calamity Jane was famous for dressing in men's clothing and acting like a Calamity. She had a remarkably good shot and she was a fearless rider for a girl as young as 13 years old! She was fighting in a battle when the capt., capt. Egan got shot and then she rode her horse out in the middle of the fighting to rescue him, that is when she was christianed the name Calamity Jane.

Calamity Jane's maiden name was Marthy Cannary. She was born in Princeton, Missouri, May 1st, 1852. She had three sisters and two brothers. She was the oldest. Her parents were natives of Ohio. When she was a child she wanted to go on adventures and ride horses, which started her on her manly habits.

She also acted as if she were a man, she spat, drank, chewed tobacco, used bad language and drssed in mens clothing, as if she were a man herself. At the age of ten she set out on her own, the only things that she had were friends, a good shot, and daring horsemanship.

As an adult she a had a child, a girl that was said to be given up for adoption. She was christianed the nickname, "Calamity Jane" during a battle when she saved Capt. Egan after he had been shot in 1872 in Goose Creek Camp, S.D.. She died on August 1st, 1903 and was buried in Deadwood beside Wild Bill Hickock.
