The creation-evolution controversy is not between the Bible and science as such
It is between some persons who hold certain interpretations of the Bible and other persons who maintain certain extrapolations or theories in science
extrapolation
an estimation beyond the known range of data
evolution controversy
conflict appears to be between debatable theories of some scientists and doubtful interpretations of some expositors rather than a conflict between the facts of science and the text of scripture
intellectual tools which allow you do some some analytical thinking before you make up your mind
The first tool is using the analytic approach
The second tool is defining the problem and the terms The third tool is recognizing assumptions The fourth tool is looking at data and interpretations |
Analytical Thinking
requires more time and effort than simply believing what someone else tells you,
However, it will bring you closer to the truth. |
Most modern, well-educated people often believe
science is so complicated that years of study are necessary to understand it and that is should be left to the experts
if we are to decide about complicated issues such as cloning or combining different genetic codes
we must be able to think critically about scientific endeavors
Basic Information
frequently ignored and opinions become repeated so often that they take on the tone of laws and must be frequently re-examined and the conclusions analyzed
Every person's obligation
to use the brain God gave him or her
Descriptions of evolution
The term is both used as the "fact of evolution" as well as "the most generally accepted theory of evolution."
A single scientist may use the term in both ways because of the variable uses and definitions of this single word. Evolution means an unrolling or a process of change in a certain direction. It is the extent of the change which is the main key to the controversy |
Three levels of evolution
individual variation, microevolution, macroevolutoin
Creationists
Find few conflicts with the first two levels of evolution, but theydo not accept macroevolution because of its direct conflict with their interpretations of the creation account in Genesis.
Seven assumptions of macroevolution
1. Non-living things gave rise to living material e.g. spontaneous generation occurred
2. Spontaneous generation occurred only once 3. Viruses, bacteria, plants and animals are all interrelated 4. TProtozoa gave rise to the Metazoa 5. Various invertebrate phyla are interrelated 6. Invertebrates gave rise to the vertebrates 7. Within the vertebrates the fish gave rise to the amphibia, the amphibia to the reptiles, and reptiles to the birds and mammals. Sometimes this is expressed as the modern amphibia and reptiles had a common ancestral stock |
Unsound scientific work
(1) "scientific" work improperly done (unscientific)
(2) science falsely so-called (pseudoscience) (3) philosophy and religion (non-science) |
Number of variations in creationism and evolutionism
at least four versions of evolution and six versions of creation
