What are titrations used to check?

The purity of acidic or alkaline products

What type of reactions do titrations use?

Neutralisation

6 steps to titration?

1. Add a known volume of alkali to a titration flask, along with a few drops of indicator

2. Fill a burette with acid

3.Using the burette, add the acid to the alkali a bit at a time, regularly swirling the conical flask for a good mix

4. Slow down when you think the colour is about to change

5. The indicator changes colour when all the alkali has been neutralised

6. Record the volume of acid used

Why is it important to control the rate of a chemical synthesis?

Too fast = unsafe

Too slow = Product would be slowly made and so the profit would decrease due to low yield

What is an exothermic reaction?

A reaction which gives out energy to the surroundings (heat) and rises in temperature

e.g. fuels burning, combustion, neutralisation, decomposition

What is an endothermic reaction?

Reaction that takes energy (heat in), the temperature goes down as it takes heat away from the surroundings

Photosynthesis, ice to water, ice melting
