What methods can you use to collect gas?

1. A gas syringe- You can use a gas syringe to collect any gas. Gas syringes usually give volumes accurate to the nearest cm cubed, so they are very accurate.

2. Upturned Measuring Cylinder or Burette-

You can use a delivery tube to bubble the gas into an upside down measuring cylinder or gas jar filled with water but this method is not good for collecting things like hydrogen chloride or ammonia because they just dissolve in the water. You can also use an upturned burette, which is a bit more accurate.

You can measure the mass of gas that a reaction produces by carrying out the experiment on a what?
Mass balance
What happens in the mass balance experiment?
As the gas is released, the mass disappearing is easily measured on the balance. This is the most accurate method.

Why does the mass balance experiment have a disadvantage?
It releases the gas straight into the room
One mole of gas always occupies what at room temperature and pressure?
24 dm cubed (= 24,000 cm cubed) at room temperature and pressure (RTP= 25 degrees Celsius and 1 atmosphere)
What is the volume of 4.5 moles of chlorine at RTP?
4.5 x 24 dm cubed
