carries the image of an amputated man who has the function of keeping the gate. He is a figural evidence of an ancient Chinese punishment –the cutting of a limb-- meted out to trespassers of the law. Such a person would then have been put in charge of guarding the royal parks. The presence of a human in the bronze is an innovation. |
