Abraham
The type of religon Islam is. Abrahamic. Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham. Abraham branches into Ishmael, Arabin, and Muhammad.
Abu Bakr
The successor of Islam after Muhammad died. Muhammad never spoke about his succession.
Abu Talib
Muhammad's uncle who he lived with when he was young.
Aisha
Daughter of Abu Bakr's. Muhammad's favorite wife.
Al-banna
He was the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. It spurred an Islamic rivivalist movement.
Caliph
A successor of Muhammad. Abu Bakr was the first Caliph. After Ali, Muslims broke into two groups (Sunni and Shi'ite)
Fatima
The daughter of Kadija and Muhammad. The wife of Ali.
Gabriel
The key archangel of Islam. Revealed to Muhammad on Mount Hera. Reveals the Qu'an to Muhammad.
Al-Ghazali
He started the Islamic branch known as Sufism. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam.
Hadith
Specific accounts of Muhammad that are not written down in the Koran. 3000 authentic Hadiths. Different braches of Islam believe different portions of Hadith.
Hajj
One of the pillars of Islam. It is the pilgrimmage to Mecca that all Muslims are supposed to take at one time in their life.
Husayn
The second son of Ali and Fatima. He was killed in a battle. His death is still celebrated by Shi'ite (Shiism)- the second largest branch of Islam.
Iblis
The name of the devil in Islam
Imam
means "faith." a key virtue in Islam. It comes from the same roots as Amen.
Isnad
One of two parts that Hadith is broken up into. It is the "chain of transmission." The less authentic portion- who said what to who
Jihad
The internal and external struggle that a Muslim has to be a good Muslim
Kaba
The ritual center of Islam. It is the cubic sturcture in the middle of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. It contains the black stone.
Khadijah
First (and during her lifetime) the only wife of Muhammad.
Mecca
The most sacred site of Islam. It was the home of Muhammad. Home of Kaba.
Medina
Where Muhammad migrated and officially started the Muslim state. It was considered the founding city of Islam.
Mihrab
The prayer niche in the wall facing Mecca. It marks the direction that Muslims should pray.
Minaret
The towers next to a Mosque that Muslim prayer is called from.
Minbar
The pulpit from where sermon is delivered at Friday service
Muezzin
The person who calls the community together for prayer. From the minaret if there is one.
Muslim
A person who practices Islam.
Nasser
He was the second president of Egypt. He led Egypt into the 6 days war with Israel, but lost.

Rumi
Suffi writer. Persian theologian and mystic.
Salat
One of the 5 pillars of Islam. Muslims are to pray 5 times a day. Facing Mecca. Muezzin is the person who calls the prayer together.
Shahadah
One of the 5 pillars of Islam. It is the Muslim profession of faith. "There is no God but Allah" and Muhammad is a prophet.
Shi'ite
One of teh branches of Islam. More flexible, allows for changes over time, believe in the Hadith of other leaders, dont want non Arabs to be Muslims. Was created after Ali became Caliph.
Shirk
An unforgivable sin in Islam. Idolotry. Association of anything with God.
Sufi
Not a branch of Islam. It is a branch from Sunni. Considered the mystical Islam. Believe in the "Night Journey."
Sunni
A branch of Islam created after Ali became Caliph. Traditional, conservative, the largest branch of Islam, believe in only the authentic Hadith. Sufi is a brach from Sunni.

One of the 5 pillars of Islam. It is the required alms giving of all Muslims. 2.5% of your worth should go to charity.
