The lessons I learned boiled down to two things: numbers and sincerity. If you don't contact enough people you won't stumble upon opportunities; likewise, if you aren't "yourself", no one will give you the time of day.

Lots of companies spam: make unsolicited telephone calls, direct mail campaigns, good old email newsletters. Yet they only work on the rarest of occasions. So why do we do it? Laziness and fear- we just don't have the guts to get out there and flirt.
