He is staunch Roman-Catholic, and resigns from his tax-law post because the authorities are trying to force the churches to delare their wealth. Turns to private pratice and the vatican rewards him.

Was the mayor of Mersault.
Was the founder of “la Paulee de Mersault” which is the last and biggest of the 3 gastronomical events held around the Hospices de Beaune auction held in November. It is the greatest bottle party in the world.
Originally, it was35 guests at his house. Now it is 600 guests, all bringing an interesting bottle of wine, squeezing into the Chateau de Mersault.

Dominique is Jules grandson. Took over for his father Rene in 1982.
In 1987 the métayage arrangements began to end, and the estate became more involved in the vineyards as well.

Give a brief History of Joesph Drouhin.
Founded in 1880. Maurice, Son of Joseph, coems back from the warin 1919 and decides to make high end wines and to invest in land. He bought up uncultivated lots that had een wiped out by phylloxera. Also bought 2.3 ha in clos de Vougeot.

Robert Drouhin, a nephew, was forced to take over at 24 when Maurice suffered an unexpected stroke. Continued to buy up land in great areas. Bought up a ton of Chablis when they weren’t such a hot property.

Robert has four children: Frederic, Phillipe, Veronique, and Laurent.
Veronique is involved at domaine Drouhin in oregon. She has aalso bought up the majority share of Les Petit Monts, the premier cru right above Richebourg.
Describe the Drouin winemaking style. Do they use new oak or old? what is their Philosophy?
Use of new oak is minimal. (proud to make wine from grapes, not wood.)
Theoretically, nothing should dominate. It should be balanced in order to age well.
Delicate and feminine in style, but with an intensity of terroir.

Give a brief History of Domaine LeFlaive.
Joseph LeFlaive was born in 1870. His family owned 2 ha of vines, and they were not winemakers. But he began buying up great land in the depressionistic era between 1905 and 1925.

In 1989, Anne-Claude LeFlaive attended a biodynamic seminar. Sinde 1997, every vineyard parcel has been farmed 100% biodynamically.
Is Domaine LeFlaive a biodynamic producer?

Domaine LeFlaive does not cellar underground. Why is this?
They do not have an underground cellar due to the high water table in Puligny.

Give a brief history of Domaine Leroy.
1868- François Leroy sets up as a wine merhcant in Auxey-Duressess. Son Joseph takes over, then Henri, who diversified into eaux de vie as well.

In 1930, Henri befriended Edmond Gaudin de villaine, and eventually became co-owner of DRC with him.

Henri’s had two daughters, Paulline and Marcelle (known as LaLou). Lalou became fascinated with wine, and eventually took over at DRC for her father. Known to be a hellion. She had a fight with Aubert, the heir of Edmond, and DRC took over her postion and began marketing itself.

Domaien Leroy purchased the 12 ha domaine of Charles Noëllat when it came on market, which included holdigns in Romanee st Vivant, Clos du Vougeot, Richebourg, etc. Old vines of superb quality. Then Leroy bought Domaine Phillipe remy, which held vines in Gervry, Les combottes,etc.

Give a brief history of Louis Jadot.
Founded in 1859. 3 louis-Jadots later, Andre Gagey was asked to run the company as regent for the current Louis-Alan Jadot, who then proceded to die in a car accident.
Gagey took over as manager. In 1985, the firm as sold to Kobrand, Jadot’s US agents. Now Henry Gagey runs it, and Jacques is the winemaker.

Lardiere came on in 1970, at the age of 23. He dealt very succesfully with a challenging vintage in 1971, nullifying the effects of hail by vinifying the damaged grapes at extrewmemly higgh temperatures. They turned out to be the only Beaune negociant to have no tainted wine at all in that vintage. Gagey has trusted him ever since.

Minimal intervention mixed with messed up risk taking.
Red wines can reach ferment temps of 35˚C (95˚F), where most would worry about stuck ferments.
100% destemming.
Cold-soaks for 5-6 days.
Open ferments in wooden vats with natural yeasts.
SUPER logn ferments up to a month.

Oak usage is odd: Normally, big vintages are balanced by new oak, lighter ones dominated by it.

In 1945, frost stopped the Chablis region from producing a single bottle.

The ravenaeau family owned vines but sold them in 1950 because they were unprofitable.
François Raveneau married into the Dauvissats, and inhereted some viens in Les Clos and Les Forets. And began buying up land when it was cheap as hell. Died in 2000, having bought up 7.8 ha of vines.
