MDRIs
military dietary reference intakes
NSOR
nutritional standards for operational rations
GP-I
General Purpose, Improved contains 1447 calories
MRE
good for up to 20 day in the field
Cold environment energy requirements
*temperatures (32 to 57 degrees F) can increase energy requirements 5 to 10 percent.
*energy requirements
may increase to approximately 54 calories/kg body weight.
Hot environment.
*For temperatures in the 86 to 104 degree F range, energy requirements may increase 2.5
to 10 percent
Altitude Energy requirements
high-mountain areas may reach 6,000 to 7,000 calories a day.
Carbohydrate.
*Approximately 50 to 55 percent of total calories consumed should come from foods and beverages
with carbohydrate sources.
Protein
*requirements during periods of intense physical activity; they range from 0.8 to 1.5 gram (g) protein per kg body weight
Fluid requirements
1 quart of beverage per 1,000 calories expended is a reasonable goal.
Working at high altitude increases water needs to approximately
4 to 6 quarts per day
Gram (g)
A unit of measure for mass equal to 0.035 ounce.
Kilocalorie (kcal)
Common unit used to describe energy needs. The term “calorie” is used in the text of this document in place of the
term “kcal.”
Kilogram (kg)
A unit of measure for mass; is equal to 1,000 grams and 2.2 pounds.
Microgram (μg)
A unit of measure for mass; is equal to 1/1,000,000 gram.
Survival ration
A high-carbohydrate, low-protein ration, designed to minimize the effects of acute starvation. This ration is stored in life-saving craft aboard ships and in emergency kits aboard aircraft.
Restricted ration
lightweight, operational ration requiring no food preparation other than rehydration. This ration is intended for shortrange patrols when minimal ration weight and space requirements are overriding considerations.
Operational ration
A nutritionally adequate ration composed of semi-perishable and/or shelf-stable pre-prepared food items for use under actual or simulated combat conditions.
