When do the cold weather guidelines go into effect?
Whenever the temperature or wind chill factor reaches 32 degrees or lower.

When on the scene of an emergency that does not require the use of pumps or power-take-off (PTO), what can be done to keep these components from freezing?
Engage the pumps or PTO.
Preventative Measures for Apparatus in Cold Weather.
Open tank fill on pumping apparatus to recirculate water.
Carry snow melt or sand.
Operate intakes/dishcharges frequently especially front and rear intake valves.
Use tap water to thaw frozen gates while in quarters.
Keep apparatus inside, including reserves.
Bleed air tanks at 0700/1900, more if necessary.
Preventative Measures for Personnel in Cold Weather.
Carry extra clothing in locker.
Skull, stocking cap, ski mask may be worn, black or blue.
Sweatshirts (plain black or blue) may be used as a change of clothing when other garments are wet.
Second set of PPE when first is wet.
Review hypothermia section in Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Manual.
Who should you notify for civilians that are exposed to cold weather?
The Emergency Management Agency and request the “Mass Casualty Van”.
If units wish to be placed out of service for rehabilitation from cold weather, who must approve this request?
The BFC or EMS Supervisor concerned. The units must also be placed back in service via the same authority.
Should an incident arise within the department requiring additional units (i.e. Mass Casualty Incident, etc.), who should OUC contact in reference to placing these units back in service as soon as possible?
The BFC or supervisor of the unit(s).
Who should request the Rehab Unit through the OUC for incidents of extended duration?
The Incident Commander.
