special precautions using bug spray

POLLINATOR PROTECTION

there are
honey bees
allfalfa leafcutting bees
alkali bees
Pollination is crucial to economy of state etc. But insecticides kill bees. So what do bee people do to protect bees during bloom times?
they move hives constantly from fields to fields

You can reduce bee losses from insecticides by understanding foraging behavior of bees, insecticides, taking precautions
Pesticide selection (pollination protection)

get a pest survey, trap, check it out b/f using insecticides. SCOUTING detects ...
threatening pest populations b/f plants attract bees. IF spraying is necessary, follow label to min bee poisoning.
INSECTICIDE FORMULATIONS

different formulas pose varying hazards to bees.

this stuff if it has similar size/texture to pollen will get picked up while bees forage for pollen. BAD FORMULA to use. like what?
micro encapsulated formulas:
Penncap-M poses greatest haz

Bees pick up Penncap-M encapsulate and take back to hive and feed to larvae! So dusts are bad here than wettable powders, w/h is more harmful than ECs are. So large granular and soil apps not harmful to bees. plants absorb systemic insecticides quickly. To minimize bee poisoning select a low haz formula
Application timing

Bees leave hives during daylight when temps are b/t ...
55 and 60 degrees. so? do treatments at night or early morning b/f bees are active.

night apps reduce bee kill by 50%

app after 7 am twice as haz as early morning apps
abnormal weather can change these temp timing strategies.

If temps are low, following treatments, what?
insecticide residues on crops stay toxic many times longer than good weather.

Also hi temps during late evening / early morning bees are going to be out!!!
PREDATOR & PARASITE PROTECTION

besides being aware of bees, there are other bugs to think about too when doing a job.

can you recognize those common & uncommon beneficials?

Are predator / parasite levels so hi to consider alternative control measures?

Is there a spray that will control the pest but NOT harm beneficias?
so again we do what?
SCouTING !!!
HUMAN PROTECTION

this shit is bad for us!

esp organophos[hates and Carbamates.

remember what?
only difference b/t me and a mite is the dose I;m using!!!

Dose makes the poison
****************************

some insecticides are stronger than others!! think!

the label is best guide here

look for signal words for toxicity

proper PPE

first aid

restricted entry interval REI
to protect workers
