The Four Nobel Truths
First Truth
Everyone's life contains "dukkha" translates as suffering, sorrow, or disappointment) Life isn't all bad, it just never measures up to our expectations
Second Truth
Dukkha is caused by "Tanha" (Translates as selfishness, greed, putting one's self before everyone and everything else, i.e. we are responsible for our own suffering
Third Truth
In order to stop the suffering (dukha) we must stop the greed or selfishness (tanha)
The Fourth Truth
In order to stop dukkha we must follow the Buddha's instructions through the use of meditation, especially the "Eightfold Path" (right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right meditation)
3 convictions that underpin the Four nobel Truths
Anicca, Anatta, Nirvana
Anicca
Why does selfishness cause suffering in our lives? Because of the interconnectedness of all creation and the fact that the world is constantly changing. Nothing exists unto itself; nothing stays the same. To be selfish is to o against the way the universe works. It isn't sinful, it is stupid! When we are selfish, we are not punished, but we cause grief and pain to ourselves and others
Anatta
If everything that exists is changing and interrelated, then we human beings are anatta or literally "no-SELVES" Our individuality is not a thing that exists unto itself and does not change. Our true selves are realized through a constantly changing process of relating to other selves, of being part of other selves. This means that we can only know ourselves fully by interrelating with others
Nirvana
To realize all of this ( the 3 convictions), to feel it, to live it is to realize nirvana or enlightenment. Nirvana literally means "to blow out" i.e. to blow out on'es ignorance, individualistic existence and live as part of this constantly changing, interrelated flow. When one does, one experiences peace a the depth of one's being even amid the suffering and disappointments of life and a a freedom to do the right thing no matter what others think and how difficult it is. Leads to a universal compassion for all beings
______________ is at the core of a Buddhist ethic.
Compassion
It is not a law but something one does automatically when one is enlightened
-not something created, but something that is uncovered in a process of enlightenmentAt
_____________ is at the heart of Buddhist ritual practice
