1958

Summer of violence in Nottingham - violent attacks on black and Asian people.

1959

Conservative MP Cyril Osborne uses the slogan 'Keep Britain white' in his election campaign.

1962

The Conservative government passes the Commonwealth Immigration Act - only immigrants with a valuable skill or could do a job where there was a shortage of workers could enter the country.

1964

The Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson limited the numbers of immigrants to 8,500 per year.

1965-66

Wilson passes the Race Relations Act 1965 making it illegal to discriminate against any person because of their colour or race.


The Race Relations Board 1966 handled complaints about discrimination - however they dismissed 734 out of 982 complaints, and was made up of a panel of all white people.

1967

Formation of the Nation Front - an openly racist political party. They wanted all immigrants to be sent back to their country of origin and for an end to immigration. It was also against any mixing between white and non white communities.

1968

Commonwealth Immigrants Act in March 1968 restricted immigrants to 1,500 per year. Restricted to only allow Commonwealth citizens with a British passport who had a British passport and we're born in Britain, or whose parents or grandparents were born in Britain.


20th April 1968 Conservative MP Enoch Powell made his 'rivers of blood' speech saying that British people were feeling overwhelmed and threatened by immigrants. He was sacked in response.

1971

A new Race Relations Act was passed making it illegal to discriminate in areas such as housing and employment. This was in response to Enoch Powell's 'river of blood' speech.

1976

Racial Equality Act - this made racially offensive music or publications illegal, and let employees report employers they felt were discriminating against them.


Commission for Racial Equality - this investigated racism. This was a positive move but showed that previous actions had not worked.
