Sound

In terms of sound the producersof Breaking Dawn insert an upbeat dance track in the very beginning of theclip, using this allows them to connect with a younger target audience astypically this genre of music is associated with teenagers. This clearly incontrasting with the thriller soundtrack used later on in the drama when therunner finds himself in danger. This intentional use of sound at each differentlocation (the house and isolated road) allows the viewer to follow along withthe story line easily. In the second location the soundtrack fades in and thedance track fades out, setting the mood and atmosphere effectively by buildingtension. This works well as the viewer is now anticipating the following eventsof the clip, and in a sense making them ‘sit on the edge of their seats’. Thisaction is something that all thriller films should aim to include and breakingdawn plays with the use of sound in order to achieve this. The tension is heightened further with thepleonastic sound of the gun, and this ultimately contributes to the climax ofthe clip as it acts as a music sting. At this point it allows the directors tospur the clip to its final moments leaving the viewers asking questions as thelast sound we hear is a gunshot. The fact that we are left with questions showsus that their thriller opening is successful as their aim was to accomplishthis in only a two minute clip.

Mise En Scene

Progressing further interms of Mise En Scene the producers of Breaking Dawn have carefully craftedtheir use of props in order to fit the thriller genre. The protagonist is seen to be wearing redtrainers, a colour that is often associated with blood and danger. This couldbe potentially foreshadowing later events that will unfold as the clipprogresses. This connotation is continued further with the use of the red titlesequence and the red screen saver background used on the mobile phone when theplay button is pressed to start the dance music track. The main character isalso seen to be wearing a grey tracksuit, this usage of casual attire fits inwith his action of working out and also once again links back to reaching outto a teenage audience. When the viewers are introduced to the other charactersin the clip, the contrast between the two different groups is heightened as theantagonist is seen with a black car, tie and gun. The colour black is oftenassociated with strength and power, making them to appear superior over thevictim. The protagonist is seen to be witnessing a murder unfold as an innocentby stander, successfully building tension for the viewer as the colourconnotations are hinting at him to get killed himself.

Cinematography

In referral tocinematography used within the clip the director purposefully uses over theshoulder shots in order to set the scene and mood of the thriller. This can beseen when the protagonist is working out on the bicycle and when the victim isseen to be in his stationary car, both are extremely contrasting to one anotherwhich is why it makes their video so successful. Close up shots are alsoinserted to emphasise the important usage of each prop, in this case the sweatdripping down the protagonist’s face, the shot of the water bottle, him tyinghis shoe laces and the gun. All in which contribute to the thriller theme, theyhave edited all the necessary moments in order to leave a cliff hanger whichmeets the main criteria of a thriller genre. An extreme close up of the victim’sknuckles is effective as it portrays the anger he feels, the silent screamemphasising this emotion further. Tight framing is also implicated at thispoint to portray that the victim feels trapped and that there is no way out.

Editing

In terms of editing thedirector shows the action to take place in chronological order, the continuitymeans that their editing is of a high standard as there is no errors. Meaningthat they are deserving of the high marks that they received. (40/40) The protagonist is the one who motivates theshots, this shows him to subvert the stereotype of being as innocent bystander, as usually they would have not have a high importance in regards to amurder. This is strengthened further as he is in the first and last shot of theclip. Continuing on from this the director has used a purposeful ellipsis atthe end of the clip, the viewer hears the gunshot firing but doesn’t actuallysee the murder take place. This in being extremely effective as it allows theviewer to make up their own mind of what would happen next, leaving them intheir own thoughts and creating them want to see the full movie.
