Function of the brainstem

Conduit for the ascending snd descending pathways from the spinal pathways to the cerebellum and thalamus.

Integrative: cardiorespiratory- solitary nucleus ,consciousness-reticulaf formation.

Centrally the brainstem is bordered by what?

The clivus of the occipital bone.

Running through he brainstem is what?

The 4th ventricle and he cerebral aquaduct

Point st which the 4th ventricle narrows into the central canal of the spinal cord

The obex

What is the floor/anterior wall of the 4th ventricle how is his related to the medulla

The rhomboid fossa

The roof is formed by the superior cerebellar peduncle.

Open (more rostrally)and closed medulla

The dorsal colomn pathway:be aware of the dorsal brainstem structures

What is the brainstem tegmentum

Ventral the ventricle system contains much of the cranial nerve nuclei, reticular formation,as well as some ascending and descending g tracts

What is the brainstem tectum+ any important relations to mention?

Superior and inferior colliculi

Superior is involved in the visual pathway

And inferior part of the auditory pathway

Te trochlear is the only cranial nerve to emerge from the dorsal brainstem just inferior to he inferior colliculus

The descending pathways- corticospinal tract for example will primarily pass through what longitudinal devision of the brainstem

The basal pons found most anterior to the brainstem

Can you recognise the brainstem slices by outline shape alone: rostrally and caudal pons, open and closed medulla, midbrain

Can you see the main features of the brain stem sections

Oculomotor nuclei brain stem section MRI

Corpus collosum fuction

What is the hypothalamic sulcus, pituitary stalk, hypothalamus and septum pellucidum.

Hypothalamic sulcus - in lateral wall of the third ventricle that marks the boundary between thalamus and the hypothalamus. It extends from the intetventriculat foramen and the cerebral aquaduct

Pituitary stalk connects the hypothalamus to the posterior pituitary gland

Septum pellucidum a triangular doubel membrane that extends from the corpus collosum to the fornix. Seperates the anterior horns of the left and right lateral VENTRICLES

The hypothalamus- made of nuclei synthesis and secretion of neuro hormones autonomic and neuroendocrine function

Diencephalon
