Brain Stem: 3 Parts
Reticular Activating System
Medulla
Pons
Reticular Activating System
Alertness and Motivation
Medulla
Blood Pressure, Heart rate, Breathing
Pons
Sleep, Dreaming (REM) Respiration
Cerebellum

(falling down drunk)
Voluntary Motor Movements
"cerebral palsy"
(Walking, Etc) Coordination, Balance , Ability to speak clearly.
Cerebellum

(falling down drunk)
Voluntary Motor Movements

"cerebral palsy"

(walking, etc)

Coordination, Balance, Ability to Speak Clearly
Thalamus

(Hearing Memory)
Receives Sensory Information
(every sense EXCEPT for SMELL)

relays this info to the parts of the brain that can make sense of it.

"some schizophrenics have an abnormal Thalamus'
Olfactory Bulb
Receives the sense of SMELL

sends it to the part of the brain that can make sense of it.

Located near areas of the brain that deal with memory.
'Olfactory Memory"
Limbic System

(know 3 parts)
Hypothalamus
Amygdala
Hippocampus
Hippocampus
Memory

(one of the 1st area's to go in Alzheimers)
Hypothalamus
Food / Water intake, Metabolism, everything autonomic.

Tells you when you are full- if not working you feel hungry all the time
Amygdala
Emotions
Cerebral Cortex

(including the 4 lobes)
1. Occipital Lobe
2. Parietal Lobe
3. Temporal Lobe
4. Frontal Lobe
Occipital Lobe
Determines if you understand what you are looking at. "Visual Recognition"

If Damaged - visual hallucinations, problems recognizing shapes, colors etc
Parietal Lobe
Spatial Skills (sense of direction, map-reading, blow-drying your hair)

Touch Sensation (hot-cold, smooth-rough)

Speech Production
Temporal Lobe
Understanding Auditory Stimuli
or (language) and memory for auditory stimuli.

Damaged Temporal Lobe- speech problems-can't understand words. such as
"Stroke Victims, Migrains" also auditory hallucinations (hear voices that are not there)
Frontal Lobe
Reasoning, Planning, Motivatin, Organization, Judgement, Emotion-regulation, Personality

This area is not fully formed until adulthood (20's) although experience/responsibilities can speed development!
Myelin
Fatty waxy substance that insulates portions of some neurons in the nervous system
Acetylcholine (ACh)
A Neurotransmitter related to muscle movement & perhaps consciousness, learning & memory

(Memory & Memory Loss.)
Dopamine
A Neurotransmitter that plays a role in movement, learning & attention
GABA

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid
A Neurotransmitter - regulates arousal & general level of energy & alterness.

* Plays an essential role in normal brain function

* Loss of GABA can produce seizures, arousal levels become too high
Wernick's Area
A region of the Left Temporal Lobe.

Plays a role in the comprehension of Speech
(unable to understand spoken language)
Broca's Area
A region of the Left Temporal Lobe.

Plays role in the production of Speech (patient unable to produce understandable speech)
Corpus Callosum
A Thick Band of Neurons that connect the left & right hemisphere of the brain.

Passes information back and forth between L & R Hemispheres.
(w/out it each side would ignore the other)
