Le Musigny is relatively steep and thus very well drained, holding a gradient of 8 to 14 percent across the whole site. It sits on the lower slopes of a hill known as La Taupe – "The Mole". The high proportion of chalk and limestone in the soils here, coupled with its excellent drainage, means that not only is there a small clay component, but the vines are forced to develop deep and healthy root systems in search of water. This terroir helps to create rich, fruit-forward Pinot Noir that combines elegance and power – an all-important combination which has led Le Musigny wine to be repeatedly described as une main de fer dans un gant de velours – "an iron fist in a velvet glove".

Echézeaux

Echézeaux

The lower areas of the site tend to have heavier clay soils and also poor drainage – a result of both this soil make-up and their proximity to the valley basin below. The Echezeaux du Dessus, Les Poulailleres and En Orveaux lieux-dits on the upper mid-slope are generally recognized as being the climat's best patches, because of their stonier, thinner soils and good drainage. While most Echezeaux producers make no secret of where their vines are located, it is rare for these details to be stated explicitly on Echezeaux wine labels. The north-eastern quarter of the site is occupied by the independently recognized Grands-Echezeaux climat – acknowledged as being superior to the other Echezeaux wines and thus more deserving of its separate Grand Cru appellation status.
