Echinacea (Purple coneflower)



-Stimulates cytokine production and leukocyte phagocytosis.


-Might enhance immune function in colds and flu.


-Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial in vitro (blocks cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase).




Adverse effects: taste, GI upset, CNS (Dizziness/headache). Possible allergic reaction.

Gingko Biloba

Made from leaves of the tree.


-Increases blood flow/improves circulation.


-Favorable CNS effects (memory/alzheimers).


-Anti-oxidant/free radical scavenging.




Adverse effects: Epileptogenic seeds, cannot be used with anticoagulants (antiplatelet).

St. John's Wort

Made from soaking flowers in methanol.


-Inhibits NE and serotonin (5HT) reuptake (antidepressant)


-Could possibly be helpful with some tumors/HIV.




Adverse effects: Can potentiate other antidepressants (serotonin syndrome), may accelerate the metabolism of some other drugs by increasing CYP450.

Serotonin Syndrome (toxicity)

Twitching, sweating, headache, agitation, shivering, etc.




"CNS overdose"

Saw Palmetto

Blocks 5-alpha-reductase; reduces conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in prostate.


-Treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement)


-May inhibit growth factors and lipoxygenases in prostate.






Adverse effects: GI upset, decreased libido, hypertension

Coenzyme Q10

Potent antioxidant; reduces blood pressure. Helps with coronary artery disease and may help early parkinson's. Aids ATP formation.




Rare adverse effects; blocks warfarin.

Glucosamine

Promotes cartilage. Some minor anti-inflammatory effects.




Allergies possible with shellfish source.

Melatonin

Serotinin dervative from the pineal gland.




Adverse effects: decreased sperm quality with chronic use, my reduce leutinizing hormone surge (/prenancy), inhibits prolactin (/nursing), can cause mild hypothermia.
