What is Prazosin used for?
alpha-1 blockers

used for HPTN, also used for BPH (decreasing tone of the prostatic urethral smooth muscle

1st does syncope is SE
What are beta blockers used for?
migraine prophylaxis - decreases VD in CNS.

glaucoma - block ciliary body secretion of aqueous humor - decreasing pressure

can't be used in pts with bronchoconstrictive problems because it causes constriction
What is the antidote for Organophosphate (nerve gas/insecticide) overdose?
atropine or pralidoxime (2-PAM)
What is bethanechol used for? Pilocarpine? Carbachol?
direct cholinergic drugs - stimulate parasymp

B - atonic bladder - especially postpartum - increases tonicity

P - acute angle glaucoma - causes miosis, allowing for better drainage of aqueous humor - most potent stim of glandular secretion

C - glaucoma - similarly to pilocarpine - long duration w high potency
What is atropine used for? Scopolamine?
anti-muscarinics

A - centrally and peripherally on muscarinics - reversal of bradycardia and reduction of hyperactive bladder (gotta go). Cycloplegia

S - motion sickness, blocks short term memory
What is succinylcholine used for?
anti-nicotinic

acts like ACh - binding at ACh receptor - causing initial fasciculations due to stim. Then, flaccid paralysis occurs.

primary uses are for rapid endotracheal intubation, electro shock therapy, surgery

can cause significant apnea
risk of malignant hypothermia especially if w halothane
What are the roles of adrenergic receptors?
Beta - stim adenylate cyclase, yielding high cAMP

Alpha 1 - stimulate PLC, yielding high DAG, IP3; resulting in activated protein kinase C and high calcium

Alpha 2 - inhibits adenylate cyclase, yielding low cAMP
What is progesterone used for?
maintain the endometrium, inhibiting gonadotropin release. Normally, produced in response to LH.

major use for contraception and endometriosis

can also be used for endometrial Ca, treat dysmenorrhea, and to control dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Used after conception to prevent further fetal loss in women who have habitual abortion
